Workshop for Media by WCS at Nagarhole NP - 20, 21 Dec 2003

Wildlife Conservation Society (India Program) conducted a two day workshop on wildlife conservation issues for the media on 20, 21 Dec 2003 at Nagarhole National Park, Karnataka. I went along with WCS as a volunteer with another volunteer from IBM. We left Bangalore a day earlier, ie, on 19th Dec to go ahead and make arrangements.

The workshop was held at Murkal, inside the park. We were extremely fortunate to have a wonderful sighting of a male tiger on the first day. A sighting that I will remember for the rest of my life.

The next two days we were occupied with the workshop activities. Talks were given by KM Chinnappa(former Range Officer and currently President of Wildlife First), DFO, RFO, Sanjay Gubbi, Praveen Bhargav. The workshop was attended by 25 journalists from various media like Times of India, Deccan Herald, E TV, etc. Saturday evening the media people had a game round at Nagarahole range. Myself had the opportunity to go in jeep with Ravi and a forest guard for game round. That night I accompanied Ravi when he went to drop Chinnappa at his residence on the fringes of the park. On way back to Murkal we had a sighting of a palm civet and a rare sighting of a leopard cat.

Sunday morning Chinnappa took everyone on a walk inside the park and demonstrated field craft. Myself had a good birding session simultaneously, and saw hill mynas, a racquet tailed drongo, and a malabar giant squirrel too. The walk lasted for 3 hours. After that we had breakfast at Nagarahole, then back to Murkal where Praveen gave a presentation about Wildlife First.

After lunch on Sunday we packed up, left Murkal and along with ACF and his accomplices, visited Nagapura resettlement village. WCS had helped the Forest Department in resettled several families from inside the park to this land outside the park in an effort to minimize human habitation in wild areas. After that, we dispersed, and we reached Bangalore a little past 8pm.
