Birding & Photographing - Hebbal and Madivala Lakes, Bangalore
A couple of friends from the birding/photographing circle, and myself went to
the Hebbal lake on Sunday morning, and in the evening visited Madivala lake.
Hebbal lake sports a beautiful garden with a whole variety of flora, which in
turn attract many birds. The lake also attracts a large number of water birds.
Unfortunately the morning was cloudy with light being very dim, and the sun hidden
behind thick dark clouds. I remember seeing
- Pied Crested Cuckoos - some 5 of them
- Ashy Wren Warblers - plenty
- Purple Rumped Sunbirds - plenty of females
- Purple Sunbird - one male
- Brahminy Kites - many juveniles, some fishing
- Black Kites
- Darters - couple of them
- Little Egrets - quite a few
- One female Asian Koel
- Purple Moorhens - few
- Dabchicks
- Pond Herons - few
- One Sandpiper
- Garganeys - Job pointed them out
- Little Cormorants - few
- Spotted Dove - few
- Tickell's Flowerpecker - few
- One unidentified raptor on a lamp post some 100 meters away -
It looked
like a falcon to me, Job said it could be a Shikra.
In the evening we met again at Madivala lake. Light was quite good, and we took a
boat to reach the islands where the Pelicans were. We saw some 50 to 75 Spot Billed
Pelicans, and a few Painted Storks. They are here for quite a few weeks now, and I hope
they will remain longer, for I wish to come back and try to photograph them again.
